Teacher’s Biography: I have a BS in Elem. Ed, and a Language/Learning Disabilities Certification from UHCLC. I taught public and private school for ten years, then I home schooled my son for eight years (grades 5-12). In 1993 I began teaching Science classes to home schooled kids.
Class Time: Wednesday, 12:15 – 1:45
Class Size: 5 minimum, 10 maximum
Cost: $45.00/month, September through May, Lab and supply fee $30/yearly (due at registration.)
Required Text and Workbook: Bob Jones University Press, Life Science, new 3rd Edition (2-volume consumable text book includes Student Activity Book - OR – Student activity Book may be purchased separately if you do not wish to consume the student text)
Supply List: Loose-leaf notebook and paper, 5 notebook dividers, notebook zipper pocket, a set of colored markers or pencils, pen or pencil.
Class Content and Style: I will emphasize the scientific method, good lab procedures, and organizational skills (including note-taking and keeping an organized notebook). Topics will include: Biblical Creation, classification, cells, microbiology, botany, zoology, life processes of organisms, genetics, biological evolution versus God's Creation, and the human body systems and anatomy. In class we will do approximately half lecture/discussion and half experiments, investigations, and hands-on activities.
Homework: Out of class will be mostly reading the chapters and assigned exercises in the workbook, plus a small project each quarter. I will assign about 2-3 hours of outside work per week.
Evaluation: I will assign a grade for each six weeks (I divide my classes into 5 "sessions"), made up of class participation, daily work, homework, extra credit activities, and chapter quizzes. A "Progress Report" will be sent home with the student after each session and an e-mail reminder sent to parents.
