Bio: I began teaching in the fall of 2001 after completing my Master
of Arts in teaching from
Required Text and Materials: folder
(teacher will provide), zipper pocket to keep supplies in, pencil, stick glue,
scissors, scotch tape, and crayons. The
supplies will be stored in your child’s zipper pouch, and will be available for
use during other courses, if need be.
Course Content: In this class, your child
will take several pieces of writing through the entire writing process:
prewriting, writing a rough draft, revision, editing, and finally,
publishing. In the fall semester we will
concentrate on narrative writing. We
will learn how to use “grabbers” to begin our writing, learn about the use of
dialogue, strong verbs, transitions, and many other skills that will make our
narrative writing shine. If we have
time, we will also complete a poetry writing unit. In the spring semester, we will write
informational texts. We will begin by
researching a topic and taking notes; then, we will turn those notes into
chapters of our informational books. In
both semesters, each piece of writing that we take though the entire writing
process will be published in a hard-bound picture book, complete with your
child’s text and illustrations. If your
child completed Writer’s Workshop last year, he or she is welcome to take the
class again—new material and methods of writing will be introduced, and methods
learned last year will be reinforced.
Expected amount of homework per week: Since this class is a supplementary class,
minimal homework will be assigned.
Course Evaluation: I will send home weekly
“update” emails to keep parents informed of what we have learned in class each
week. I will also hold a fall and spring
conference (or phone conference) with each child’s parents to update parents on
their child’s performance in the class.
