Bio: I began teaching in the fall of 2001 after completing my Master
of Arts in teaching from
Required Text and Materials: folder
(teacher will provide), zipper pocket to keep supplies in, pencil,
stick glue, scissors, and crayons. The
supplies will be stored in your child’s zipper pouch, and will be available for
use during other courses, if need be.
Course Content: Guided reading is a
balanced approach to literacy which combines the best of phonics and whole
language instruction. Your child will be
assigned a leveled reader on his instructional reading level each week. Using that reader, your child will complete a
variety of phonics, comprehension and language arts lessons. Comprehension, phonics and language arts
skills are also reinforced through weekly classroom centers, where the children
play a variety of learning games. This
course also includes a shared subscription to the website, readinga-z.com. If your child took the guided reading course
last year, he is welcome to take guided reading again this year. New material and concepts will be taught each
week!
Expected amount of homework per week: If your child’s completes the weekly homework
lessons, this guided reading class is intended to replace your child’s reading
curriculum for the year. Your child will
be expected to complete 3 or 4 additional lessons with his guided reader each
week. These lessons will be emailed to
you in an easy-to-follow format after class each Wednesday. Parents are also
expected to print out guided readers and worksheets (sent via email in PDF
format) and send them to class with their child each week.
Course Evaluation: I will send home weekly
“update” emails to keep parents informed of what we have learned in class each
week, as well as periodic updates about your child’s current reading level. Homework will be graded on a check-plus
system and will be sent home no more than two weeks after it is turned in. I will also hold a fall and spring conference
(or phone conference) with each child’s parents to update parents on their
child’s performance in the class.
